Actually we already wrote a how-to for setting Gmail to be selected as the default mail application in Gnome but that included some steps and Firefox advanced configuration, besides, that only worked on Firefox and supports just the "To:" form.
There is now a script called Gnome Gmail that comes as .deb for Ubuntu and .rpm for Fedora and Red Hat which adds support for Gmail to the Linux Gnome Desktop. Unlike the solution above, Gnome Gmail supports "To:", "Subject:", "body", "CC:", and "BCC: fields.

After downloading it, Go to System -> Preferences ->Preferred Applications, and select Gmail as the preferred Mail Reader. You can then test it by selecting any "mailto" link in your browser.
